The Beatles visit Rishikesh

The Beatles ashram was spread over 14 acres of forest near the banks of River Ganga, on land leased from the state government. By several accounts, it was quite comfortable: with toilets, western-style furniture, electric heaters, running water and other comforts. It was at this ashram that The Beatles enjoyed one of their more creative phases, penning as many as 48 songs. Twenty of those, including Back in the USSR, were eventually recorded. When the lease expired two decades ago, the ashram was abandoned. Fans have tried, with little luck, to create a memorial to The Beatles. Canadian artist Pan Trinity Das turned one of the yoga halls into the Beatles Cathedral Gallery, with graffiti dedicated to the Fab Four.
